| How can I ever forget Brent? He was my son's best buddy, and the guy always surrounded by friends, planning yet another adventure, party, mischievous prank, you name it. His smile? It lighted up a room and if it was directed your way, you felt special, appreciated, and loved. I enjoyed the times Cam, Brent, and the guys would show up for a meal; I'd throw something together and Brent would enjoy the food with such gusto - like he was eating in a 4-star restaurant - so appreciative - and the first to take his plate to the sink! Fourth of July on Angle Lake was a quiet sewing circle without a dose of neighbor Brent! Remember those big water gun and balloon fights?! An athlete? Watching him swim gave me such a thrill -in a close race, he'd always dig deep and find the strenth to win. Brent had more enthusiasm for what life offers than any 10 people put together. I hope we can take his energy, enthusiasm, and dedication to friends and family as inspiration for living our lives. |

| Although we only swam with/against each other until I moved away in '95, I always remained in some contact with him often through Cam... in 2002, we met up in Ohio at D-III nationals. I had talked to him a few weeks before, and we were going to look for each other there. When we got to where nationals was being held, I saw one of the national posters on a Burger King window... and there is brent's face, and shaved head and all swimming butterfly - I was pretty excited, telling all my teammates that the guy on the poster was Brent Rice (a few of them recognized him from previous nationals), my friend who I swam with in Seattle... I hadn't seen him in 6 years, and there he is on the NCAA poster!
We next day, we met up at the meet, took a picture together, talked a little about old friends, and I gave him props on making the ncaa poster... and by the end of the meet, props for his three individual top 8 finishes... |

| The perfect friend... is what I have been thinking off the past few days. Thats what Brent was to me and to everyone who knew him. He always had something funny to say and was never grumpy or in a bad mood, he always made me smile. I lived with him in the beach house and and I always admired how he lived life.... without worry, everything was an adventure, he focused on the present and his friends, everyday things that people like me take for granted because we are too focused on whats going to happen tomorrow.
The first day I met him we were leaving for a road trip to Salt Lake City and he just jumped in the van and came with us with no hesitation, not knowing anybody!! We sat in the back seat and just talked the whole way, and I kept thinking this guy is nuts, but he was awesome.
He used to carry around this half gallon Smirnoff Vodka bottle that he cleaned out and used as a water bottle around the house and every time I would see it I would laugh because because it looked like the real thing!!!
He'd go to these theme parties and wear the funniest outfits, and peek into the glass room at night when we were sleeping!
I moved to Phoenix about a month after he came to Flagstaff and visited him along the way, and it was like a breath of fresh air and old times just being around him. These memories are great and vivid and I am thankful to have had a friend like him. Cheers, Brent. |

| Regrettably, I didnt know Brent as well as most, but I remember swimming with Brent during the summer's when he came back from school, and talking with him at swim meets at CWU. He always gave me advice on my stroke and encouraged my love for swimming. Eventhough he whupped me every time, it was fun swimming against him. I could tell he really loved this sport. I really enjoyed talking with him because he was always positive and an all-around good guy, and I will miss our conversations.

| Brent was the sweetest! He took me to my most spontaneous camping trip ever. One miniute, I'm going to bed and the next, my backpack is packed and I'm in the back of Brian Y's car. He made me realize life is full of choices and its okay if I don't know what I want to do this minute. He always put a smile on everone's face and I loved his dancing. I don't know if I could have made it through some of last summer withour him. He always said the right things and brightened my mood. |

| I don’t even know where to begin when it comes to Brent. Just like many of you, we all have so many great stories and have been lucky enough to experience them with him. Brent had an amazing ability to so quickly touch people’s lives. He was witty, adventurous, compassionate, introspective, giving, and an individual that you knew you would be friends with for the rest of your life, no matter where you went in life. Last year I was fortunate enough to have Brent, (and as a result, all of his crazy friends too) become my friends. Together we had some amazing times that I will never ever forget and will cherish for the rest of my life.
The one in particular that stands out the most is Micah’s Birthday where after dinner we headed off to Bell Town Billiards. It was here that Brent quickly became earned the title of “dueling dancer”. Brent of course, some how had made a friend on the dance floor. As the music played on, Brent picked up the pace, put forth his best moves and unobtrusively began showing his slick dance skills. Next thing I know as Ginger, Cheryl and I look out, Brent and this guy, who obviously saw him as a challenger, are full-on in a dance face off!
I will never forget the moves that Brent pulled that night and the animated looks on his face. He was A cross between Duce Bigelow, Male Gigolo and Zoolander! Never in your face, or even obtrusive, with this guy, but just there having fun, entertaining us, and appeasing the challenge set forth by someone he did not know. He was not there to prove anything or show that he was better, he was just Brent. The smile on Brent’s face will stay with me forever. Love you lots Brent and will miss you, but I know that you are looking down on us and smiling.

| Brent was a “true” friend. There was just this feeling that he gave you when you met him. It seems as though twenty minutes can’t go by in a day that I don’t think of something that he did, or said. I was fortunate enough to meet him on that same trip to Salt Lake City that Sheryl did. I remember we all met up at midnight to leave, and Brent was the only one not there, Ginger called him and found out he was sleeping. So he grabbed his things (a small back pack with just the necessities) and then he race down to meet up with us. When we got to S.L.C., Myself, Brent, and another soon to be friend Brian; shared a room, and we all stayed up into the morning hours just talking about everything. I never met anyone, or new of anyone that didn’t like him. One thing I do remember is that I never once heard Brent say anything negative about anyone, and he would always bend over backwards to help you, when you needed it. While living with him at the beach house, I learned how to live each day to its fullest, because you never know what will happen tomorrow. And how to put an eggs on my hamburgers
(Which was something that he loved to do). I remember one night when he came home at about 3:00am, and everything he had was soaking wet, because he had gone hiking by himself, then kind of got lost, and then the weather changed and it started to down pour, he had some of his things drying for days. He definitely lived his life to the fullest. He was an inspiration to all. Anyone that was lucky enough to know him, or even just meet him, are going to be forever internally blessed with his presence.

| Classic memory...
Last summer, on one of those days you can only find in Seattle, where the sky is perfectly clear, the mountains are out, and everyone walking in the street is talking about what a great day it is, our favorite Brent calls and says that we're "taking the boat out." So a bunch of us gather at the Rice casa, including Jerry, "Captain" Brian, Kat, and Ginger and begin the process of getting "the boat" ready. There's about 7 or 8 of us total and the boat, by the way, is a rowboat, where one person can row at a time and is probably made for maybe five people max. Adventure over? No way...load up the food, drink, and people and we're off...slowly...to where? How about the lighthouse on the north point of Vashon island? Brilliant! (Note sarcasm)One person rowing...eight people...huge cargo ships passing through the sound, and right through our course I might add!! The picture I'll send Cam is when we're at the lighthouse (yes, we actually rowed from Des Moines to Vashon...thank you Captain Brian!) and is before we set out on our return journey, which was much sloppier than the way out and is why we look so happy in the picture. We definitely "pulled in" to shore after the sun had set, starving, and tired...but just happy to be on land, the mainland that is. Moral of the story, that adventure symbolizes Brent along with his sponteneity, sense of humor, positive attitude, and tendency to come up with the most random ideas of things to do that always ended up being so fun and memorable. I have never met someone so inclusive, giving, and just plain happy with life and everyone in it. His ability to light up a room with his presence speaks volumes of him and his family and their openness and generosity with everyone. I always envied Brent's way of not taking things too seriously, not always having a plan, and creating his own adventure. How lucky and blessed we are to have known him. |

| The last time I saw Brent he was dressed as a woman. Don't worry; it was Halloween.
Brent was one of those rare people you could spend just three hours with and never forget. He had an innate kindness, a very unique and special way of being present with everyone he came in contact with. He would always say hi and ask how you are with a genuine care that most people only mutter out of habit. He was also incredibly funny and so much fun to be around. I am not sure what I will miss most about Brent but I am sure I will never forget him. |

| Brent is The Man. He had the most energetic, outgoing personality that made everyone around him happy. His unique sense of humor always brought grins and laughter to everyone. After swimming with him for years, I will never forget the determination, selflessness and energy that he gave off. I loved to watch him race because of what a fierce competitor he was, and because of his incredible talent. You could tell that he was going to win, every time. You just can't find better teammate, or true friend than Brent. One of my most recent memories of him:
Gavin and Cam and I were bowling in Ballard around 2am, we get finished to discover that the bus lines have since closed for the night so we set off walking back towards the UW. After a few miles, we hear some voices that seem familiar. Sure enough, Brent and some of his college swimming friends were on the sidewalk ahead. We had no idea that he was in the area, so this was completely unexpected. He kindly intruduced us to his friends, and we all ended up staying at their house talking and playing games well into the morning. Brent always seemed to have a way of sharing his outgoing personality and energy with everyone around him. He will be dearly missed, and never forgotten. |

| I grew up swimming with Brent at Gregory Seahurst Swim Club, Husky Swim Club and at Mt. Rainier High School. As a Speedy Sixer and 8&Under at GSSC I always looked up to Brent as a role model and friend. I still remember playing squirt guns with him at the pool when he was no older than 8.
When I was a freshman at Mt. Rainer Brent was a senior. His skills in the pool and fierce competitiveness still inspire me today. When Brent got up on the blocks and stood with his chest out ready to swim, I got that tingley sensation up my spine because I knew I was going to see an amazing swim. As Mike Philips once put it, "Brent has more clutch than any other swimmer." Brent would decide that he was going to swim faster than the people next to him, then he would do it.
A of Brent that sticks out in my mind is the soap fights in the showers after practice. Those were always fun until Rick came in to break up the party. I guess not much had changed from 6 and 8 year olds having squirt gun fights to 16 and 18 year olds having soap fights. Another memory is that before Mt. Rainier swim practice, you could almost always find Brent and Cam sitting in the parking lot in Cam's car pigging out on candy. Thoses seniors got away with everything.
I will miss Brent dearly. |

| I’ve known Brent for about as long as I can remember. At different times in my life he has been a friend, teammate, role model, swimming adversary, and a partner in mischief. Some of my earliest memories are from summer swim league when I was about 9 years old. As much as I wanted to hate Brent for always beating me, with his personality it just wasn’t possible. He always had that grin on his face, and with it a friendly desire to really get to know you. No matter who won (which was almost invariably him), he was always the first to shake your hand and compliment you on a great swim.
Swimming with him at Mount Rainier, Brent was the consummate teammate. Always offering encouragement, he practiced as hard as anyone I’ve ever met, and he had a rare the ability to make workouts fun with his playful and sometimes mischievous presence. It was always a pleasure to watch him race. Not only did Brent make it look easy, he had a competitive streak and wouldn’t back down from anyone. As the anchor on several relays I was on, Brent gave us all so much confidence. It didn’t matter how far behind we were, or how fast he had to swim; he would always find a way to get to the wall first.
But for all the speed Brent had in the pool, he was remarkably slow in the locker room. If there was ever a time where Brent left the showers without the hot water being long gone, I was certainly never aware of it. I used to dread the days when he and Cam had to leave practice a couple minutes early to swim at KING. And not just because I missed his company.
As a friend, Brent had the ability to brighten a room with his simple presence. He found a way to make the people around him lose their inhibitions and join him in his antics, no matter how crazy or far fetched they were. And even with all of his interests he was always happy to listen to whatever was on your mind. I am so fortunate to have known Brent, and I’m sure his energy, exuberance, and optimism will live on in everyone who had the pleasure of his company! |

| To a friend, teammate, co-worker, accomplice, and mentor. I will never forget the advise, help, sweat, punishment, and lessons we shared together. You were always the MAN to beat in everything you did and your drive helped everyone around you become a better person. Remember the long shifts at Angle Lake, the morning work outs at Gregory Seahurst, guarding lap swim at 5:00am at MR and even some trouble that we both learned from. Or how about the races across Angle Lake in the crappy row boat with the rigged oar-locks that never stayed in. Miah NEVER did make is across! Or your crazy long runs... for FUN you called it. Around the entire neighborhood of Angle Lake! Once was enough for me! Truth is I could go on for hours here.
YOU WILL be greatly missed, Thank you for all the memories and I'll never forget. BEST WISHES to the Rice family! I only hope my child will have such pride, talent, fun, drive, and love for life as Brent did.
I will never forget you!

| One more thing...I have to give credit where credit is due. I would not be the feared and fearsome "Sharks and Minnows" player that I am today if it was not for the experience of trying to get away from Brent and Cam in the pool. Those guys were so tough, I learned all my nasty tricks from them and I have not been caught since. We will all miss Brent Rice, but I take comfort in the fact that he lived more in 24 years than most people live in 70. |

| Brent was a great guy to any and everyone. I remember when Brent, Alex and I swam angle lake in the rain after a 3 mile run. We made it to his grandmother's house across the lake and had lunch. He always made the best of everything and never had a bad thing to say about anyone. It's still hard to belive he's gone. We should all hope to be more like him. I will never forget about Brent Rice my freind, coach, teamate and hero.

| I remember the first trip we took when i was a freshman at MR. We had finished swimming against Mark Morris earlier that night. Near the hotel we stayed at there was a bridge over a river. The river was about 20-30 feet down. As I remember, it was Brent, Cam, Jarrett, Gavin, Ryan, Roger, and myself. Brent was going on about jumping off the bridge, how cold the water was going to be(this was about 10pm as recall), who was going to call the ambulance, what Rick was going to do when he found out... and so on. This is when I figured out how crazy he really was. Thanks for the memories and the guidance. Take care my friend. Marcus |

| This is the way I will always remember Brent: Hiding a "midnight snack" in his sleeping bag in Yosemite because he wanted to see bears, cliff jumping at night at Beaver Creek, AZ, prefunking for class at Whitworth--he was the originator of White Trash Day! Dancing at clubs in Mexico with a neck brace, screaming at the hurricane while sitting in the hottub, playing the "firewood game" at Glacier Ntl Park and swimming in Lake McDonald, dancing to "Ride Wit Me" in the car headlights at Zion, belting out "Sweet Home Alabama" while driving around Baker Lake, sneaking into the beer garden on the 4th of July to steal unfinished drinks. Brent made everything more exciting! Parties and road trips will never be the same. I'll never forget you, Brent. |

| Brent was a really good guy, and he was probably the last guy I would have imagined passing away at such an early age. He was a really energetic and interesting person, and all around good guy. When I think of "spur of the moment," I think of Brent. After all, how many people would decide on the spot to join a bunch of strangers for a car ride down to Salt Lake City, and then share a hotel room with 3 strangers? And then to top that off, to go to a Halloween party with lipstick on his chest to look like an indian! We'll all miss you Brent!

| Durring the short time i swam for Whitworth, Brent always gave off an air of genuine care for all of his teams mates, and would be there to give you a smile(god that sounded cheesey...) even though i didn't get to know him very well, he was always kind to me, and very easy going. i truly respected him as an athlete; always busting his ass; and i respected him as a person. the news of his passing came as a complete shock, and left me speachless for quite a long time(and me being a theatre major, that is saying something). he was a wonderful man to be around, and it is hard to think that he is no longer with us. i hope others remeber brent like i do, a wonderful person with a great smile. |

| I have so many memories with Brent it is hard to even know where to start. I was Brents neighbor his whole life. We were only 22 days apart. Granted he always teased me about him being older. We spent many summer days together, when he wasnt swimming, we were runnin outside together. I was the lazy one I would sit in the Red Wagon and he would pull me all around the back yards. Our families had many games of soccer and whirlpools together. My favorite times were when we would sneak out and walk down to the park. I had no idea why but we did. We also went sledding I was a big wuss, but he would drag me down a hill. He was such a great guy. The last time I got to see him was a year ago on my Birthday. I didnt realize how special that time was until this year. We both celebrated our birthdays last year like we did when we were younger. On his birthday I hung out at his house by Redondo, I remember makin fun of his now famous hamburger with eggs. I watched as Scott and Brent destroyed their cake and remember laughin to his many jokes. 22 days later I had my birthday, we had a bbq played volleyball. We then went out to the local Yard Arm Pub for drinks. I was having a hard time with things in my life. Brent told me a few things that made me feel on top of the world. (this all over eatin homemade hashbrowns that he grated and cooked himself) I was devasted to hear about Brent. He was my neighbor, friend and a brother too me. |

The first time we met I instantly became friends with Brent through Cam and had some great times with him. He made me feel like we had been buddies for a long time the first time I ever met him. I liked him a great deal because he was a real down to earth guy who you could just tell lived his life on his terms. I remember the time I spent around Brent as always being a blast with never a dull moment. |

| I was incredibly saddened to hear the news of Brent's passing from my brother Richie, who was one of Brent's best friends as we all grew up swimming together at Gregory Seahurst and Husky. It's been years since I've seen any of the Rice family, but there are so many great memories of the long, lovely summers in Ellensburg, Wenatchee, and of course, terrorizing the SSSL. I remember Brent and Richie always pulling crazy pranks, and all of the Rices, one of the sweetest and most loving families I have ever met. I am on a long road trip this summer, and will be thinking of Brent and hoping he's looking out for me on the road. |

| Like everyone I have so many great memories of Brent... one that stands out today is the time Tom had us play Sharks and Minnows the day before Thanksgiving Break at Whitworth. To make a long story short, one by one the whole team joined the shark side; everyone except Brent. Even with the whole team trying to get him, Brent made it to the other side popping up with the ever-present grin on his face. To this day, whenever I play sharks and minnows I tell the story of the minnow that got away. |

| When its this time of the year there is only 1 thing on your mind.. the 4th of July! My birthday was conveniently only 2 days before. Brent and the whole gang used to buy enough fireworks to take over a small country. Not to mention those big sparkler bombs that the whole lake heard! The 4th was a celebration of summer and I remember going around with Brent to various parties and eating all the food, hanging out in the back yard shooting bottle rockets at each other :) I pretty much spent every 4th at the Lake with Brent and every one. I wont forget any of them. Keep your ears open because there is bound to be some big fireworks shot off as a tribute! |

| I remember this time last year druing the Tour de France, Brent was very inthralled in the event and watched it every chance he got. One night I got home and found some people sitting in our living room watching a movie, but the odd thing was when i went downstairs, I could hear Brent yelling and screaming from the balcony. I ran upstairs to find Brent on the edge of his chair staring into my TV which he apparently moved onto the balcony and hooked it up to the main one. It was the most intriguing thing to see with commotion coming from both inside and outside, but whenever the race got exciting, Brent was the loudest and drew everyone everywhere to him just to check out what was making Brent so audible.
Brent always made my everyday life more enjoyable, from running on the boardwalk to the gourmet dinners of chilli fries. I miss your ear-to-ear smile! |

| The whole Rice family has shaped my life with their inviting attitude towards everything. The Rices always share what they have and dare you to reach higher in anything. I guess I always thought of Brent as the crazy Rice who was the first to do that dare or whatever that was a little more risky. Some of my favorite 'man tests' as Brent would put it were in cross country. Brent made sure that every time we were near any body of water our bodies would be in it. State that year was great, Yokers, Brent thanks for getting us there it meant a lot to me. Brent I miss you tons but have no doubt that you were needed for some reason to be called home to your Heavenly Father a little sooner than the rest of us. I can think of now one better to quickly induce a little more spontenaity, happy attitude, and deep drive to succeed than you. Till we meet again. |

| I swam with Brent at Whitworth and I hate that such a tragedy has left us without anymore of those great stories that have embodied Brent's existence. While we will always have the memories, I can't help but quote Tom Dodd, our old coach, when he said we all feel a like we got short end of the stick. I mean, honestly, every time we would see Brent we couldnt wait to hear another one of his stories, or better yet, be part of one. I am sure that God had to come up with some pretty adventurous stuff for Brent when he got to Heaven, that is, in order to keep his frenzy on the up. Brent was awesome, is awesome and forever will be known as awesome! |

| At the Whitworth alumni meet a couple weeks ago I was able to see all of Brent's teammates over in Spokane. The things we did that weekend were exactly what he liked to do. We had a adventure on the the bridge, a dance party at night, and a alumni swim meet where everyone had a great time swimming against the current swim team. He would have loved that weekend and it was awesome to see everyone else enjoying that weekend as he would have enjoyed it! |

| This time last year, I'd experience one of the best few days of my life. I'd spent the entire Halloween weekend with Brent, and it was also the last weekend he was here before he actually moved down to Arizona. If I recall correctly, he was dressed as a 'slut'. :-) high heels, mini-skirt, tank top, makeup... what a sight! (I think he actually had better looking legs than most females I know!) The night started out in a party at Wallingford then we headed over to Bothell. I'd played DD that night, so I drove the boys over to Bothell... and the entire time we headed out there, Cam (dressed as an Oompa Loopa)in his druken state kept saying, "My grandma lives out here!" The next day, Brent, Cam, Jeff, Jay and I headed over to Central to see Kristie swim and to meet up with Brian. I still remember going out for pizza and pool afterwards where Brent promptly grabbeed the pool chalk and streak blue lines across his face! The next day and a half was just hanging out before he left. I really miss having him around, especially during this time of the year, but it makes me greatful that we got the chance to really live it up while he was here. Some of my happiest memories was the crazy moments I'd spent with him... and I won't ever forget them... or him. Miss you lots Brent! |

| This time last year was the last time I got to hang out with Brent. I just moved to LA and my fam wasn't around for Thanksgiving and of course being a Rice, he invited me down to SD to Jerry's place to spend Thanksgiving with them. We ate all day long and drank all day and night long. Missing your smile that always brightened p my day! |

| I grew up with Brent, Cam, Alan Waller- and continued to Train with Brent through his college swimming career. He was someone very dear to all of us and that we will all hold in our hearts forever. I was shocked to hear about all this...Brent's passing sent ripples through the swimming community. He will be missed. Good looking on the website Cam. ~ Dip. |

| During my recent trip up to Crystal Mountain to ski I was thinking about Brent and how he loved sno-boarding. Every time I ski through the trees or do something crazy on the slopes i remember Brent and how he loved to lead all of us into the trees or down a double diamond. I'm sure he is following all of us around the slopes and making sure we have a good time! |

| Wow, I really miss Brent. When he was alive I never thought I'd say that. To be perfectly honest we fought all the time. Actually, that was the way we were. I loved him more than anyone I have ever known, and yet we never worked together. He and I both knew that. But I miss being able to call him, complain about my latest relationship, talk to him about anything, I miss his laugh, and the way he danced (P.S. if anyone else ever saw him dance I know you laughed too :) I am so sad that even 7 months later I think to myself "what would Brent do here?" or "Brent would love this." Now every time I have to go off in a corner and cry my friends know it's about him. I guess I just miss my friend. We all do. |

| I walked accross Whitworths campus a few years ago and couldnt believe that enough time has passed that I didnt know a single person there, then I ran into Brent. He made me feel like a college kid again! I lived with Jeff and Jerry for 3 years at Whitworth, and every time They got to talking about swimming they always talked about their younger brother Brent. I know the great pride that they had when both Brian and yourself decided to go to Whitworth. It is with great shame to have just found out the news of your Passing. I talked Jerry into becoming a teacher and I just read that you yourself were a teacher and I have to think that perhaps Jerry had a part in that. The last time I saw you was at the Taste of Tacoma, you were working for some meatless meats company passing out free samples. The funny thing was you told me not to eat it "tastes like shit" as you were passing out samples you were eating Pizza. As I left you yelled over to me "Meatlovers Pizza too" Thats the stuff Im going to hang on to!! Say hi to Prefontaine for me, I bet your a better swimmer then him!! |

| This is a letter, a tribute, (the best I can give at the moment, and long overdue at that) to Brent Rice. I hope this message will give him the justice as intended. Brent was an amazing friend, confidant, a kind, selfless and most of all, a loved person. He'd make breakfast after a long night of drunken jenga. (Of course, when we partied with Brent, we partied all the way.)Like so many, I did not know him all that well, but we had our meaningful moments on our drives to visit his brother Jeff, in Tuba City every other week or so and the camping trips with the Flagstaff group. We would talk about anything ranging from our favorite music, to where we would like to be. Of course, his answer would be something along the lines of "Right here, right now." He seemed so content with all aspects of his life which seems such a rarity now. He didn't seem to be rushed, or caught up in the hectic everyday life of modern day America. He was happy living exactly the way he did, hiking or climbing, even if that meant he was going by himself. He was an independant. Everybody was smiling when they were in the presence of Brent, because he made them feel accepted and needed and most of all, appreciated. What you said always meant something to him. But, I think we all know that. Of course, I don't feel I have much of a place to say anything. Time and Time again I have contemplated what I would write to attribute Brent, and give him the credit due to his character, but it has been more difficult than I had imagined. Stepping back into that fateful night is often more than I can bare. In case you don't know me, I was the driver of the vehicle in the accident that cost Brent his life. A year and a half later and I am still stumbling over what to write. What I do know, is that Brent had a profound effect on people. Simply by walking into a room, the laughter and joy he emenated illuminated the room. I didn't know Brent as, The champion swimmer, or the all-american. I knew him as the laid-back, hiking, climbing -cool guy. He was up for almost anything, and would help with anything. He played mediator, and confidant and friend. That night, at about 2 or 3 am (the time has entangled itself in my memory) when I jumped into that driver's seat and started up again after our pit stop at Love's (gas station in Gila Bend) everyone was relaxing...Brent had taken off his seat belt. Someone had said something and Brent said, "I trust Hayley, she's a good driver." That's probably the last thing I remember Brent saying. When I was in the hospital(s), everything was a blur, and comprehending the reality of the situation was impossible. It was probably days before I actually accepted that Brent had died. When I was strapped to the gurney at the hospital, I kept asking Jeff to get Brent so he could cut through the restraints with his leatherman. He was so strong, and so loved by everyone, and that's all I could recall at that time. Impossible. I don't think I have ever heard anything negative when the subject of Brent's character is brought up, and with good reason. He never gave anyone any reason to question who he was. But, I am sure he is happy, or at least I pray he is now. He's probably challenging God to a hike to the top of K2 right now. I am grateful to be alive, and I am so grateful that Jeff and Matt had been in that car to tend to both me and Brent, and of course that we were spared. We were spared, and perhaps Brent is expecting great things from everyone. Perhaps I am rambling, and maybe I am not making much sense, but it must be known, that Brent was a good man in all eyes that were set upon him. I am sorry I didn't get to pay my respects at the funeral, but I hope I am now in the way I live my life. Brent taught me many things without him knowing it, that I have tried to live by and regard in my life. I do know, that Brent was a good man and he actually did, live life to the fullest. Erasing and re-writing this letter has become all too familiar, and thinking, "will this give Brent the credit he deserves?" Will it? I hope so. A tragedy like this has been burned into each of our family's history forever. Is it a lesson learned? Was it meant to be? Would it have happened later if it hadn't happened then? Will we ever know why these things happen, and to good people? I don't know. I do know, that we have the wonderful memories left for us to share, and that love in those memories can only become stronger and it is contagious. Brent will make us laugh again and again as his stories are retold. It is the passion of the heart that will keep him alive in all of us. He is sorely missed, but most importantly, loved. Thank you, Brent. Thank you, for having such a loving affect on everyone, and God bless you!~~~ |

| After Years Today, from a distance, I saw you walking away, and without a sound the glittering face of a glacier slid into the sea. An ancient oak fell in the Cumberlands, holding only a handful of leaves, and an old woman scattering corn to her chickens looked up for an instant. At the other side of the galaxy, a star thirty-five times the size of our own sun exploded and vanished, leaving a small green spot on the astronomer’s retina as he stood in the great open dome of my heart with no one to tell. | When Earth's last picture is painted And the tubes are twisted and dried When the oldest colors have faded And the youngest critic has died We shall rest, and faith, we shall need it Lie down for an aeon or two 'Till the Master of all good workmen Shall put us to work anew And those that were good shall be happy They'll sit in a golden chair They'll splash at a ten league canvas With brushes of comet's hair They'll find real saints to draw from Magdalene, Peter, and Paul They'll work for an age at a sitting And never be tired at all. And only the Master shall praise us. And only the Master shall blame. And no one will work for the money. No one will work for the fame. But each for the joy of the working, And each, in his separate star, Will draw the thing as he sees it. For the God of things as they are! ~Rudyard Kipling |

| I just googled my name and was shocked to find this. My brother Jim who was a swimmer for our high school, and the reason that I was a Cross-Country runner, died in October. I am so sorry for the family I know the loss was great.
I could not find if Scott took the IM record. But I am sure Brent appreciated the effort one way or another.
May God watch over all of You. |
